A student-sourced campus sustainability tour

CONNECTING STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY TO SUSTAINABILITY ON STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY’S CAMPUS

THE STORY

Donna Selch a professor at Stony Brook University on Long Island - School of Marine and Atmospheric sciences -teaches earth science courses including Geographic Information Systems and Sustainability.

One of the challenges that Donna faces as a professor is how to make science fun and applicable for students on campus. She feels that a lot of her students miss out on the fact that science is all around us, especially green initiatives and energy saving solutions. She wanted to involve her students in the Sustainability projects that already exist at Stony Brook University, to learn more about the campus and the curriculum, and for incoming freshmen to familiarize themselves with the campus.

A secondary goal for Donna was to involve the local community and invite locals to visit the SBU campus and learn about the sustainability efforts that SBU is making and how to support their work. With campus closures due to Covid-19, Donna was seeking a platform that could support these goals without requiring in-person contact with students and the community.

THE SOLUTION

Donna’s Intro to Sustainability freshman level class brings in elements of sustainability on campus. Donna incorporated these locations into the course curriculum with the creation of a Sustainability themed Geocaching Adventure lab. Students were tasked with researching sustainability elements on campus and to take pictures at those sites.

With the help of the Geocachers of Long Island, founded and led by Jamie Lavin (MoDaRiMa) and Ben Keslowitz (Bigedyben), they created an interactive Sustainability scavenger hunt on campus that gave students an introduction to mapping, geocaching, and sustainability. The Adventure lab takes students and the local community to 5 different sites, including a LEED certified campus building, hydroponic center, and bike share station.

As an added benefit, the campus tour guides now incorporate sustainability sites into their campus tours!

EDUCATING THE PUBLIC WITH A
SOCIALLY DISTANT SCAVENGER HUNT

THE STORY

In Summer 2020, Seattle 2030 Districts (S2030D) and Capitol Hill EcoDistrict partnered with Geocaching HQ to elevate and generate awareness for the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) around the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The original goal was to host  a public event with educational information about the new sustainable drainage system and see GSI in action, but then the pandemic hit and the event was canceled. As plans changed, S2030D shifted their concept and started to explore new ways to achieve their goals using a platform that would allow participants to discover ecological elements of the neighborhood in a safe and socially distant way.

THE SOLUTION

To achieve their goals, Geocaching gave S2030D access to build a Geocaching Adventure lab to create and share a scavenger hunt that would showcase not only GSI, but also other elements of Capitol Hill that illuminate Seattle’s water systems and ecological assets.

Polluted storm water flows are the biggest threat to water quality in the Puget Sound and to the species that call it home. S2030Ds’ Adventure took players on a journey to 12 Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) installations around Capitol Hill within a 2 mile/3.2 km distance that educated participants and community members with interactive experiences at each location. Topics touched on the benefits of GSI, including:

  • Providing habitat to birds and pollinators

  • Reducing urban heat islands

  • Mitigating flooding

  • Improving our community’s health by providing green spaces for all to joy

  • Reducing air pollution

By the time a participant completes all of the locations, they should know more about the construction, design, and benefits of GSI.

The Capitol Hill Ecological Adventure took participants on a tour of 12 green stormwater locations around the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Upon completion, a bonus location was revealed with one of the coolest stormwater projects in Seattle.

“I’VE LIVED IN CAPITOL HILL FOR ALMOST A DECADE AND HAD NO IDEA THAT STREISSGUTH GARDENS EXISTED! AS I BETA TESTED SOME OF THE SITES WITH FRIENDS, WE WERE IMPRESSED BY THE DIZZYING ARRAY OF FLOWERS AND TRAILS CREATED, NOT BY A PARKS DEPARTMENT OR NONPROFIT, BUT BY PRIVATE CITIZENS WHO WANTED TO SHARE A BIT OF BEAUTY WITH OTHERS AND, IN THE PROCESS, ADDRESS DRAINAGE ALONG A STEEP SLOPE. COMING ACROSS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD GEM WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS OF CREATING THE SCAVENGER HUNT.”

Unlocking hidden cities with total turtle power

THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES EMERGE FROM THE SEWERS FOR A 35 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

THE STORY

In 2019, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles celebrated the iconic franchise’s 35th anniversary. To celebrate, Nickelodeon connected with Geocaching HQ to tap into the popularity of geocaching and create an interactive real world gaming experience for kids and families. Nickelodeon targeted key global markets to generate buzz and interest for the re-imagined Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (RTMNT) series.

In the new Nickelodeon series, the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Raph, Mikey, Leo and Donnie go on adventures as they seek to uncover mystical secrets of New York City. Nickelodeon wanted to invite the global geocaching community and fans alike to unlock and discover their own hidden city’s secrets, outside of the TV series.

THE SOLUTION

To keep participant excitement levels high for a 8+ month promotion timeline, Geocaching HQ developed a multi-phased approach that engaged Nickelodeon’s target markets and reached the entire global geocaching community.

Phase One

Geocaching HQ produced 3,300 Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trackables and distributed them through an online webform hosted on the promotion landing page on Geocaching.com and featured within the Geocaching® App. For the first time ever, Geocaching HQ hosted a trackable promotion in the Geocaching® App to increase global visibility and page traffic to drive webform sign ups. An in-app message and push notification promoted the RTMNT landing page to mobile users.

Each of the four trackable designs represented a turtle, Raph, Leo, Mikey, and Donnie and told their own stories as they traveled from geocache to geocache, unlocking mystical secrets along the way.

An additional 700 RTMNT trackables were divided up and shipped to 11 official geocaching events in target cities in North America, South America and Europe. Events were hosted by active geocaching community member that were hand selected by Geocaching HQ. Each event attracted local geocachers to pick up an exclusive RTMNT trackable to celebrate TMNT’s 35th anniversary. The events in Mexico City, Sao Paulo, and New York City were co-hosted by Nickelodeon representatives that handed out special RTMNT promotional merchandise, and for NYC and Sao Paulo, \ pizza, the turtles’ favorite food!

Phase Two

Geocaching HQ and Nickelodeon collaborated to create a Geocaching Adventure Lab experience in New York City, the home of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Locations take participants (geocachers, NYC visitors, and ComicCon attendees) to uncover a secret Hidden City, a place full of wonder and mystery, located deep beneath New York. Each of the 10 locations span across Midtown Manhattan, and require participants to solve a turtle-themed riddle and learn about NYC’s hidden gems.

Phase Three

The excitement continued in early 2020 with the surprise release of 1,000 Total Turtle Power trackables that displayed the main characters from the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series. Due to Covid-19, Geocaching HQ and Nickelodeon extended the original promotion end date from May to July to allow geocachers in quarantine some more time to go geocaching (safely) with their RTMNT trackables.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ NYC Hidden City Adventure lab will continue to stay live for geocachers and TMNT fans to play as it is safe to travel and visit NYC.

Cowabunga!

THE RESULTS

Phase One

As geocachers moved Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trackables, they showed their turtle power in the form of 60,174 trackable logs including more than 1,500 photos.

One geocacher was motivated to take a detour to participate in the RTMNT trackable promotion after taking a break from geocaching. Another geocacher drove 25 minutes out of their way to the other side of a mountain to find a Donatello trackable. A TMNT fan was nostalgic for the 90’s after picking up a Leo trackable on their travels.

Over 450 geocachers and their families and friends attended official RTMNT events in NYC, Sao Paulo, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Milan, Berlin, Paris, London, Louisville, Memphis, and Mexico City. Hosting and attending the official RTMNT events became so desirable that an additional five events (that we know of) were hosted by geocaching community members in the US and Europe to celebrate the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the trackable promotion.

The Madrid event invited attendees to take part in ninja turtle themed activities including an exhibition by a local Kung Fu school and a pizza party.

RTMNT EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Phase Two

Nickelodeon and Geocaching HQ partnered to create a 10-location Adventure Lab around the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ home of New York City. Across Midtown Manhattan, participants visited the Empire State Building, Times Square, The High Line, Grand Central Station, Madison Square Garden, the New York Public Library and other iconic locations that the turtles visit in the TV series.

As 602 locations were completed, each participant arrived at the given set of coordinates, solved a riddle, and found a clue or answer to a question to unlock the hidden location and storyline. Each step of the way, NYC’s hidden gems were revealed for the 74 participants that tapped into their mystic ninja powers and embarked on the Adventure. One participant even brought their Donnie trackable along with them!

Phase Three

Although the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic around the same time the RTMNT group trackables were delivering to geocachers globally, geocachers still shared their love for the campaign and participated once it was safe to do so. During the promotion period, the RTMNT trackables traveled to an average of 70 countries each and are continuing to find hidden cities around the world. Despite restrictions on travel, the Total Turtle Power trackables traveled from geocache to geocache over 247,000 miles and the four turtles continued to travel over 7.8 million total miles!

Participation in the NYC Hidden City Adventure lab came to a halt as NYC shut down due to Covid-19. Even so, 141 total participants played the Adventure lab, 90 of which completed all 10 locations. As the outdoors began to reopen, geocachers and their families found comfort in their favorite hobby of geocaching by enjoying close to home outings and finding their own Hidden City with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

“WILL START THIS SPECIAL TMNT 35TH ANNIVERSARY TRAVEL BUG IN MY OWN TB INN. THIS TB WAS RANDOMLY AWARDED TO ME BY GEOCACHING.COM. IT IS A LEO TB. COME CLAIM IT, MOVE IT ALONG ON ITS WAY TO NYC AND BE A PART OF TMNT AND GEOCACHING HISTORY!”

TALLINK SILJA INVITES GEOCACHERS IN GERMANY ON BOARD FOR A BALTIC SEA TREASURE HUNT

THE STORY

Tallink Silja, an Estonian cruise line partnered with Geocaching HQ to introduce Tallink Silja cruises to 315,000 geocachers in Germany, the world’s second most active geocaching market.

Tallink is the leading provider of high-quality mini-cruise and passenger transport services in the northern Baltic Sea region. The Tallink Silja line connects Sweden, Finland, the Åland Islands, Latvia, and Estonia. Although locals frequently travel with Tallink Silja, not many passengers travel from outside the port countries to cruise with Tallink Silja.

Tallink reached out to Geocaching HQ to tap into the German geocaching community to create brand awareness and sales for their Baltic Sea cruises in Germany through a real life Baltic Sea treasure hunt.

THE SOLUTION

Geocachers are treasure hunters by nature and travelers at heart who are passionate about discovering hidden gems and unique cities. For this reason, Tallink Silja invited geocachers living in Germany to participate in a sea-themed treasure hunt.

The treasure came in the form of 1,500 Tallink mini ship trackables that moved from geocache to geocache with goals to travel with geocachers and share photos along their way.  Over the course of the four-month promotion period, Tallink Silja gamified the hunt for Baltic Sea treasure with a photo contest, prompting participants to take photos with their Tallink Silja trackables with #ostseeschatz (treasure of the Baltic Sea). One Grand Prize photo contest winner won a Triangel Citycruise for two in addition to accommodation including breakfast and dinner on board, estimated at 1,000 Euros! There were also six second and third place winners that received further Tallink Silja prizes.

Geocaching HQ featured Tallink Silja in the Geocaching Logbook (Premium membership newsletter) to encourage cruise sales, with an exclusive offer of 10% off on all Stockholm routes.

To set sail with Tallink Silja, Geocaching HQ invited representatives from Tallink to Project Hamburg - Im Wandel der Zeit, a geocaching Giga-Event with over 5,400 attendees. Tallink representatives hosted a display booth and passed out trackables and gave out bags with promotional materials and exclusive offers for Tallink Silja cruises.

As trackables traveled and collected photos, stories, and kilometers, geocachers discovered Tallink Silja, their routes and how they can find their own treasure of the Baltic Sea.

THE RESULTS

Geocachers in Germany and around the world moved Tallink Silja trackables 3,883,918 kilometers  (2,413,355 miles) with the accumulation of 107,988 physical touchpoints (total logs). Each individual log shared a story of Tallink Silja with video, images and copy provided by Tallink Silja in addition to indiviual geocachers’ stories of their experience with the Tallink Silja trackable.

The photo contest inspired creative sea treasure-themed snapshots of Tallink Silja trackables traveling around Germany and the world. 851 photos were shared through trackable logs on Geocaching.com and 428 were shared with #ostseeschatz on Instagram. All photos captured geocachers exploring the extensive forests, deep blue lakes, and crystal clear of the Baltic region.

At the event in Hamburg, the trackables went so fast that Tallink Silja had to limit distribution times so they could last throughout the event! The German geocaching community was excited to be included in a one of a kind and exclusive treasure hunt with the chance to go on a real Baltic Sea cruise.

Excited geocachers picked up Tallink Silja trackables at a Geocaching Event with over 5,000 attendees in Hamburg, Germany.

Although the trackables traveled all over the world, they mostly traveled throughout Germany and spread Tallink Silja brand awareness. There is a high concentration located in the Baltic Sea region!

THE STORY

The Smokey Bear campaign from the USDA Forest Service, National Association of State Foresters and Ad Council partnered with Geocaching HQ to celebrate Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday in spring and summer 2019. Though Smokey has been essential to the reduction of wildfires over the last 75 years, he still needs help.

Even today, approximately 9 out of 10 wildfires nationwide are caused by humans. With people living closer and closer to wildlands and more frequently choosing recreation activities, Smokey’s message is even more relevant today.

The campaign partnered with Geocaching HQ with the goal to renew the importance of wildfire prevention education through awareness in Smokey’s natural habitat: the outdoors.

THE SOLUTION

Smokey Bear and his wildfire prevention campaign is the longest-running PSA campaign in the United States, having first been introduced in 1944. To refresh the message for 2019 and to display Smokey’s message where outdoor enthusiasts and their families are spending time, Geocaching HQ produced and distributed 1,500 Smokey Bear 75th birthday trackables to geocachers and Smokey fans across the United States.

There are currently millions of trackables traveling from geocache to geocache through the hands of players—they accumulate stories, pictures, and miles along their journey. Some trackables have goals to travel the world, and some, like Smokey’s, are hoping to educate and share a message with all the geocachers who interact with them on their journey.

Over the four-month promotion period, geocachers and their families took part in a real-world treasure hunt in wildlands and local parks for Smokey Bear. Stewards of the land, geocachers served as ambassadors of the Smokey Bear message—committed to preserving our lands, one piece of the geocaching game board.

Throughout the campaign, geocachers experienced a moment of delight when they activated, placed, and found one of the Smokey Bear 75th birthday trackables inside a geocache. Families participated in the campaign in addition to adults who felt nostalgia for the iconic bear from their childhood. With each individual touchpoint, Smokey’s trackables shared his story to inspire wildfire prevention across generations around the United States.

THE RESULTS

As geocachers moved Smokey Bear trackables, they shared Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday stories in the form of 19,454 trackable logs.

Geocachers learned how they can prevent wildfires and that their actions are more powerful than they think. Over the 1,212,606 cumulative miles traveled, Smokey Bear trackables inspired geocachers to share stories of their experiences in forests and to take action to prevent wildfires. A former firefighter shared his own story about working with the USFS and his recommendation for others to do the same.

Another trackable traveled with a geocacher to share photos and stories at Smokey Bear events and active wildfires near the original cub’s home state of New Mexico. One Smokey Bear 75th birthday trackable was carried with a hiker for over eight miles deep into the woods to find a geocache that had fallen victim to a wildfire itself.

THEN I TOOK SMOKEY HIKING IN THE GREEN MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST. AND I FOUND AN UNATTENDED CAMPFIRE SMOLDERING! I AM A FIREFIGHTER, BUT HERE IN THE NATIONAL FOREST, INSPIRED BY SMOKEY, I GRABBED MY SHOVEL AND COVERED THE FIRE WITH DIRT.”

HOW GEOCACHING HQ HELPED KAT KRONENBERG BRING THE GEOCACHING COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF LOVE BIG

THE STORY

In 2017, author Kat Kronenberg partnered with Geocaching HQ to build awareness for her children’s book Dream Big. At it again, Kat has another amazing story to tell through her second book, Love Big. Love Big focuses on pursuing one’s passions with the help of others, all told with the magical character, Catch-M. Kat’s goal for a partnership with Geocaching HQ was to build awareness and create ambassadorship amongst the geocaching community for Love Big.

THE SOLUTION

Kat Kronenberg wrote Love Big to build the idea of achievement through working together. Kat partnered with Geocaching HQ so that geocaching enthusiasts could experience first-hand the rewards of working together as a community. To connect geocachers with the Love Big story, Kat needed to speak the language of geocachers – the way she did that was through the use of trackable game pieces.

Here’s how it works: A geocache is located at a specific set of coordinates and stays there for people to find. Once a geocacher finds a cache, they open it up and sign the logbook. They may discover some trade or swag items (small toys, key chains, trinkets or trackables) inside the cache. The general rule of thumb is if they take something, they leave something of equal or greater value. Then, they place the container back exactly how they found it and share their experience online with the rest of the geocaching community. Trackables collects logs and accumulate stories and pictures from the geocachers who move it along its way.

Geocachers requested a custom Love Big trackable through the online giveaway, or found one in a geocache. To further connect Kat Kronenberg with the geocaching community, we invited geocachers to attend three book signing events where Kat signed first edition copies of Love Big. For those who could not attend an event, we hosted a podcast interview with Kat to share the Love Big story in her own voice. A photo contest motivated geocachers to share about their adventures with the Love Big trackables to social and through geocaching logs, further spreading the message to other community members.

THE RESULTS

At the end of the campaign period, more than 2.5 times the number of geocachers that requested a trackable for Dream Big, requested a trackable for Love Big, demonstrating their added excitement to participate. Over 60 geocachers and their families got together to share stories and meet Kat Kronenberg in person at three different Love Big book signing events in the United States.

Of the 300 photos that were shared on social and through geocaching logs, 12 were selected as photo contest winners, including one that received the grand prize author’s visit from Kat Kronenberg herself. Geocachers worked together to move Love Big trackables, spreading the message of Love Big as they traveled. Kat Kronenberg won Amazon Bestseller in Lions, Tigers & Leopards Children’s Books and #1 New Release in Children’s Social Skills.

“FOR ME, IT’S SO MUCH ABOUT BUILDING COMMUNITY, AND GEOCACHING HAS SUCH A GREAT COMMUNITY. HOW FUN TO ACTUALLY GET TO MEET THE GEOCACHERS, AND SEE THEIR PICTURES, AND SEE THEM WITH A TRACKABLE. IT’S JUST MADE IT MORE FUN AND IT COULDN’T BE A HAPPIER, MORE INCLUSIVE CROWD, SO IT WAS REALLY FUN TO MAKE IT A LITTLE MORE MEANINGFUL TO HAVE FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE GEOCACHING COMMUNITY”
